WATTY THOMPSON - 7AM SET - CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF THE LAST CHANCE
The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar (North Melbourne, VIC)
Saturday, 16 May 2026 7:00 am
“The photograph featured on this poster was taken 10 years ago at 7am on a historical morning in the front bar of the Last Chance Rock and Roll Bar.
Nth Melb’s iconic Public Bar had recently changed hands and after already having an established, sentimental relationship with the venue, I was delighted to hear that it was in the safe hands of Shane & Leanne, fierce supporters of live music and a couple of kind hearted folks determined to honour the venues long legacy of hosting live music. Not only that, they were mad enough to make use of the buildings all night license, providing a safe haven for night owls and gig goers to debrief into the wee hours regardless of whether they’d come from the other side of town or from a gig in the bars own band room.
On a night very early on in the newly renamed bars history, I rode a train into the big smoke and spent a night sitting at the bar soaking in the atmosphere and discussing the bars hopes, dreams and future visions with the new publicans. The following morning I would become the very first patron to still be at the Last Chance until its official 7am closing time. This photo was taken to mark the occasion and still hangs in the bar until this day.
As Shane announced last drinks that morning, I asked him to surprise me with me with something special to mark the occasion. He whipped up a Jack Daniel’s milkshake and we gazed out of the front windows at the glow from the rising sun and reflected on the feeling that this rock & roll haunt wasn’t going anywhere in a hurry.
